The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced their nominations for their annual Golden Globe Awards this morning, beginning the countdown to the move awards season which climaxes with the Oscars at the end of February. Considered a warm up to the Academy Awards, the Globes split their awards into two categories, drama, and comedy/musical, and also honour the best in television.
This year the nominees for best picture (drama) are The Aviator, Million Dollar Baby, Closer, Finding Neverland, Kinsey, and Hotel Rwanda. Nominated for best comedy/ musical are Sideways, The Incredibles, Ray, The Phantom of the Opera, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
Best actor (drama) nominees include Javier Bardem for The Sea Inside, Don Cheadle for Hotel Rwanda, Leonardo de Caprio for The Aviator, Johnny Depp in Finding Neverland, and Liam Neeson in Kinsey. Nominated for best actor (comedy/musical) are Jamie Foxx in Ray, Jim Carrey in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Paul Giamatti in Sideways, Kevin Kline in De-Lovely, and Kevin Spacey in Beyond the Sea.
Best actress (drama) nominees are Imelda Stauton in Vera Drake, Scarlett Johansson in The Love Song for Bobby Long, Nicole Kidman for Birth, Uma Thurman for Kill Bill Volume Two, and Hilary Swank for Million Dollar Baby. Nominees for best actress (comedy/musical) are Annette Bening in Being Julia, Ashley Judd in De-Lovely, Emma Rossum in The Phantom of the Opera, Kate Winslet in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and Renee Zellweger in Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason.
Best director nominees are Martin Scorsese for The Aviator, Mike Nichols for Closer, Clint Eastwood for Million Dollar Baby, Alexander Payne for Sideways and Marc Forrester for Finding Neverland.
Nominees for best supporting are David Carradine in Kill Bill Volume Two, Thomas Hayden Church in Sideways, Jamie Foxx in Collateral, Clive Owen in Closer, and Morgan Freeman in Million Dollar Baby.
For best supporting actress we have Meryl Streep in The Manchurian Candidate, Natalie Portman in Closer, Cate Blanchett in The Aviator, Laura Linney in Kinsey and Virginia Madsen in Sideways.
Screenplay nominees include Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Aviator, Closer, Finding Neverland, and Sideways.
There were some pleasant surprises in the nominations for television which saw Deadwood, the brilliant HBO western series earn a nod for best drama and for its lead actor Ian McShane. Lost, one of the new hits of the fall is up for best drama, along with Nip/Tuck, The Sopranos and 24.
Nominated for comedy series are Arrested Development, Desperate Housewives, Entourage, Will and Grace and Sex in the City. Three actresses from Desperate Housewives, Marcia Cross, Teri Hatcher, and Felicity Huffman all earned nominations for best actress, stunning the industry.
The Golden Globes are presented live January 16, 2005.
