TORONTO FILM CRITICS NAME SIDEWAYS BEST PIC

     Following the lead of film critics in Los Angeles and New York, the Toronto Film Critics Association has named Sideways the best film of 2004.
  
This has been quite a week for Alexander Payne and his little character study which has colleted many awards from the various critics associations inNorth America, as well as dominating the Golden Globe nominations. Oscar nods seem likely. 
  
  Paul Giamatti was named best actor for his performance in Sideways, while his co-star Virginia Madsen took home best supporting actress for her wonderful performance in the same film. 
   
Imelda Staunton won best actress for her performance in Mike Leigh’s Vera Drake, and Clive Owen won best supporting actor for Closer. 
 
   The best director award went to Michel Gondry for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, which also won Charlie Kaufman the best screenplay award. 
  
  The Oscar nominated animated film The Triplets of Belleville was named best Canadian film as well as best animated feature.
