The Directors Guild of America announced their awards for excellence in motion picture directing just an hour ago. As expect, both Clint Eastwood and Martin Scorsese were nominated for Million Dollar Baby and The Aviator respectively, with Alexander Payne for Sideways, Marc Forster for Finding Neverland and Taylor Hackford for Ray rounding out the five nominees. Only six times in the history of the DGA Award has the winner not gone on to win the Academy Award for best director.
Of the nominees, Mr. Eastwood is a previous winner for Unforgiven (1992) and was nominated last year forMysticRiver(2003). This marks Scorsese’s sixth nomination having been previously nominated for Taxi Driver (1976), Raging Bull (1980), Goodfellas (1990), The Age of Innocence (1993) and Gangs of New York (2002).
Alexander Payne is a popular choice for best director for his film Sideways, while Hackford must be deemed a surprise for Ray.
Left off the list were Mel Gibson for The Passion of the Christ and Mike Nichols for Closer, both expected nominees.
