In something of a shocking turn of events, the National Society of Film Critics have named Clint Eastwood’s powerful drama Million Dollar Baby the best film of 2004 over the heavily favoured and awarded Sideways. After capturing best picture awards from the Boston, Los Angeles and New York Film Critics groups, it seemed a given that Sideways would take home the award from the National Society as they have many members belonging to the other groups. Yet Eastwood’s film prevailed.

Jamie Foxx won best actor for his performance in Ray continuing his quest towards Oscar gold, while there was a tie for best actress between Hilary Swank in Million Dollar Baby and Imelda Staunton for Vera Drake.

Both co-stars from Sideways,ThomasHaden Church and Virginia Madsen won best supporting actor and actress respectively, while Jim Taylor and director Alexander Payne won the screenwriting award.

In what must be considered an upset, Zhang Yimou won best director over Clint Eastwood for Million Dollar Baby, Martin Scorsese for The Aviator and Alexander Payne for Sideways.

The National Society’s awards were by far the most eclectic winners this year.
