The film took home awards for best picture, best director (Payne), best screenplay, best supporting actor (ThomasHaydenChurch) and best supporting actress (Virginia Madsen). Often a harbinger of the Academy Awards, these wins dramatically increase the chances of the film to earn Oscar nominations.    Liam Neeson won best actor for his riveting performance in Kinsey and Imelda Staunton won best actress for her performance in Vera Drake.    Perhaps the biggest surprise was that Martin Scorsese’s critically lauded The Aviator won just a single award, for its production design, while Scorsese finished as runner up to Payne for best director.    The Incredibles was named best animated film and also took the award for best musical score.
